Description

The house dates from the 17th century, with significant alterations and additions in the early and late 18th century, the early 19th century, and the early 20th century. It is constructed from three distinct sections of walling. The main part of the south-east front is late 18th century, built of red brick in Flemish bond with cambered openings and a plinth above an ironstone base. It has brick quoins and sash windows, with triple panes to the sides, and a doorway with an open pediment on thin pilasters, enclosing an arched entrance with a radiating fanlight and a six-panelled door raised above stone steps. To the south-west are the remains of an earlier section, comprising ironstone walls, sash windows in reveals, and a projecting outshot of similar form with a casement. The first floor of this section is tile-hung with a plinth. The rear walls are primarily of ironstone, with the exception of a narrow projecting wing dating from around 1900, and a flat-roofed ground floor addition on the north side, erected in the 20th century. The roof is tiled, with a hipped section to the south side where the ridge is lower. The interior shows evidence that the building originally began as a lobby-entrance house, with a large fireplace and a 17th-century floor beam visible. An ironstone facing was added later, followed by a further renovation which included a staircase, shelves built into recesses, and a fireplace with Regency detailing.
