Description
The Old Church of St John is a Grade II listed building located on Farnham Road in Greatham. It consists of the chancel and the ruined nave of a medieval church dating from the 13th century. The church features an aisleless nave and chancel. The chancel has a tiled roof and walls that are rendered with cement over malmstone and ironstone. The chancel arch, which is from the 18th century, is oval in shape and includes a keystone and impost blocks, although it is mostly filled except for a plain doorway. The nave is roofless, with malmstone walls of varying heights, and the arrangement of openings is distinctly visible. Inside the chancel, there is a Jacobean communion rail, an old font bowl, and wall monuments dating from 1772, 1785, 1786, 1821, and 1867. A notable feature is the tomb of Dame Marjory Caryll, who died in 1632. This tomb includes a recumbent effigy on a classical alabaster table tomb, with a wall monument behind it that features a Corinthian Order enclosing an arched panel.
