Description
The war memorial, dedicated to those who fell in the First World War, was erected in 1922 and is located in Rock Park, Barnstaple. It is made of granite and features a square pedestal with a moulded cap and base, which stands on three steps. Atop the pedestal is a tall cross with a moulded base, and the head and arms of the cross also have moulded caps. A bronze wreath rests against the north side of the base of the cross.
On the north and south faces of the pedestal, there are inset bronze plaques listing the names of the men from Barnstaple who died in the Great War from 1914 to 1918. The other two sides of the pedestal feature similar plaques commemorating those from the borough who lost their lives during the Second World War from 1939 to 1945.
The memorial is enclosed by twelve short, tapered granite posts topped with low pyramidal caps, which support heavy spiked chains; however, two chains are missing on the north side.
