Description
The war memorial in Granville Park, Aughton, was built in 1922 and stands 6.5 meters tall, made of white granite. It features a two-stepped base topped by a plinth and an obelisk. On the south face of the plinth, a bronze plaque bears the inscription honoring those from the parish who fell in the Great War from 1914 to 1918, quoting Rev. T.F. Royds. The names of the First World War dead are commemorated on bronze plaques with laurel leaves along the edges, and a laurel garland is carved in relief above these plaques on three sides of the plinth. Additionally, the south face has a bronze plaque at its base that lists the names of those who died in the Second World War. Decorative carvings adorn the top of the plinth and a thin band of carving is present below the First World War plaques. This memorial, located in the Garden of Remembrance, was unveiled on February 11, 1922, by the 17th Earl of Derby, rededicated on October 16, 1948, and restored and rededicated in 2001. It serves as a significant tribute to the fallen from both world wars.
