Description
Christ Church is a church built between 1867 and 1870 by architects W & J Hay. It is constructed from rock-faced sandstone and features a slate roof. The church includes a west tower, a nave, north and south aisles, a south porch, a lower chancel, a north transeptal organ chamber, and a north vestry. The windows showcase flowing tracery in various styles. The west tower is adorned with angle buttresses, crocketed corner pinnacles, and a pierced parapet. A southeast stair turret rises above the parapet, topped with a conical roof. Each side of the tower has two bell openings with two lights and pointed heads, while the west window consists of four lights. The west doorway is moulded and pointed. The four windows in the south aisle each have three lights, and to the right of the western window is a gabled porch featuring a moulded doorway with angle shafts. The north aisle has five bays, and the south side of the chancel includes three windows with two lights, while the east window has five lights.
Inside, the nave has five bays with arcades featuring moulded pointed arches that spring from piers with a quatrefoil plan and foliated capitals. The nave is supported by arch-braced collar trusses that rise from corbelled wallposts, alternating with scissor-braced trusses that have timber angel corbels. A small west gallery with a carved stone front is located within the tall pointed tower arch. The chancel arch is moulded and pointed, resting on engaged columns with foliated caps. The feet of the chancel roof principals are decorated with painted and gilded angels. On the north side of the chancel, there is a three-bay arcade; the western arch leads to the organ chamber, while the other two arches are blocked and feature blind tracery along with tablets inscribed with the Ten Commandments and the Creed. Below the eastern arch is a piscina with a nodding ogee arch. The east wall displays a reredos with carved scenes from the life of Christ set within an arcade of nodding ogee arches. Additionally, the stone pulpit and font are elaborately carved.
