Description
The Ormskirk Comrades War Memorial is a memorial dedicated to those who served in the First and Second World Wars. It was erected in 1921, with an inscription added later to honor the fallen of the Second World War after 1945.
The memorial is made of sandstone ashlar and granite and is located on the east side of Coronation Park, near Park Road in the center of Ormskirk. It features a tapering ashlar sandstone obelisk that stands 1.6 meters high, resting on a square sandstone pedestal and a three-tier stepped base, which has a total height of 2.4 meters. The front of the obelisk is adorned with a decorative palm branch and laurel wreath carved in relief. The base is primarily constructed of sandstone, except for the lowest step, which is made of granite.
On the west face of the pedestal, there is an incised inscription in black lettering that reads: "TO OUR COMRADES/ WHO FELL/ IN THE GREAT WARS/ 1914 – 1918/ 1939 – 1945/ THE BLOOD OF HEROES/ IS THE SEED OF FREEDOM." Additionally, the base beneath this inscription states: "THIS MONUMENT IS ERECTED BY/ THE COMRADES OF THE GREAT WAR/ ORMSKIRK AND DISTRICT BRANCH."
