Description
The Whicham and Silecroft War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921, with an addition for the Second World War. It features a 2.14-meter tall ashlar stone obelisk set on a two-stepped square plinth that is paved and surrounded by a bed of chippings. This area is enclosed by a low square concrete wall that supports ornamental iron railings. The south-west face of the obelisk has an incised inscription listing eight soldiers who fell in the First World War and two from the Second World War, which reads: MEN/ OF/ WHICHAM/ WHO/ SERVED IN/ THE/ GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918/ FALLEN/ (NAMES)/ THESE ALSO DIED FOR US/ 1939-1945/ (NAMES). Additional inscriptions on the north-west and south-east faces provide the names of 55 men who served during the First World War. There is also a secondary memorial stone that commemorates Lance-Sergeant Tom Fletcher Mayson VC, a holder of the Victoria Cross.
