Description

The Church of St Mary is a Grade II listed building located on the north side of the A595 in Whicham. It likely dates back to the 12th century, with a 17th-century east window and a transept added in 1858 during restoration. The church is constructed of roughcast stone with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof. It has a single vessel nave and chancel, accompanied by a north vestry and transept, all topped with coped gables.

On the south elevation, there are three single-chamfered two-light plate tracery windows. The gabled porch includes an elliptical-arched opening and a 12th-century inner single-chamfered entrance, with a lancet window to the east. There is a blocked pointed entrance to the chancel, while the west side features a three-light traceried window. The vestry has a window with two elliptical-headed lights under a catslide roof, and a similar three-light window and entrance with a sunk ogee to the lintel on the north side. The east gable end showcases a straight-headed double-chamfered mullioned window with three elliptical-headed lights, likely from the 17th century. The gabled transept is accented by quoins and has two north lancets along with return lancets.

Inside, the church contains box pews, three posts with arch braces in the transept, and a pulpit adorned with tracery panels and a balustrade above. There is notable 19th-century stained glass, and some headstones can be found against the east wall.
