Description
The Church of St Mary is a Grade II listed church located in Whitbeck, which likely has medieval origins but was heavily restored in 1883. It features a single-vessel nave and chancel, constructed of roughcast stone with ashlar dressings and a slate roof. The south side has three bays with paired lancets, while the west end displays a coped gable, two double-chamfered lancets, and a pointed entrance with double-chamfered reveals, along with a gabled bellcote and diamond buttresses. The east end is marked by stepped triple lancets, and the north elevation has a single lancet.
Inside, there are timber partitions leading to the porch and vestries, with arch-braced collar trusses that include kingposts. The interior also features 19th-century hanging lanterns and a double-chamfered chancel arch with detached shafts. A memorial to the Pearson family, who died between 1772 and 1829, is located on the north wall, and the chancel displays the Stuart Royal arms over the chancel arch, along with a stained glass panel depicting the Head of Jesus.
