Description
Captain Shaw's Primary School is a primary school built in 1830, with later additions. It is constructed from stuccoed stone and features a slate roof. The building has two storeys and five bays, with the end bays projecting forward. It has a moulded base, a top cornice, and a coped parapet, along with quoins and coped gables. The windows are 2-light double-chamfered mullioned windows with label moulds. On the right side, there are two bays with two 2-light windows on the first floor, one of which is blind, and an attic light. The two entrances have 4-centred heads with incised spandrels and studded doors. A plaque on the building is inscribed with biblical quotations from Ecclesiastes 12.1, Proverbs 22.5, and 50.7, along with the date. The rear of the building has a later wing under a flat roof and a lean-to outshut. There is also an attached gabled open-fronted shed with a projecting wing, possibly used as toilets, which features a 2-light blind window and an opening for a bell on the east gable end.
