Description
Calder High School, originally a house, dates from the mid-19th century and is now a school. The building is constructed of stucco and features a hipped slate roof. It has two storeys and is arranged in a three-by-three bay configuration. The exterior includes rusticated quoins and bracketed eaves.
On the ground floor, there are projecting stone windows with consoled mullions, friezes, cornices, and pierced balustrades. The first-floor windows have architraves adorned with overlapping circle motifs, pulvinated bay-leaf friezes, and consoled segmental pediments. These windows are sashed and do not have glazing bars. An inserted window is located at the left-hand end of the building.
The entrance is round-headed and features angle pilasters, archivolts, and a half-glazed door. It is complemented by a Corinthian porch with paired columns and a pierced balcony. To the left, there is a lower two-storey, three-bay wing with sash windows that include glazing bars.
On the right side, a delicate iron verandah supported by barley sugar columns curves around a two-bay bow window, which has a lean-to glass roof. At the rear, there is a stone tower with angle pilasters, an entablature, and a pierced parapet, featuring triple round-headed lights on each face.
