Description

The Outward Bound School is a house that has been converted into a school. It was built in the early 19th century and has had later additions. The building is finished in stucco and features hipped slate roofs. The north-west elevation consists of three storeys and ten bays, although the first two and the last three bays are only two storeys tall and match the height of the two-storey bays. The first two bays project forward while the fifth to seventh bays are recessed. There is a top cornice and blocking course, and the two-storey bays have a dentilled cornice. The windows are sashed with glazing bars. The entrance, located in the ninth bay, features an overlight with glazing bars and small-paned sidelights, along with a panelled door. The entrance is framed by a tetrastyle porch supported by Doric columns and an Ionic entablature, with a 20th-century iron balcony above. The building has several cross-axial stacks with caps.

The south-west return has five bays, with the central three bays forming a canted projection that includes a balcony supported by original cast iron columns, while the rest of the columns are from the 20th century. The windows on the first floor of the outer bays are sashed with glazing bars, while the others are 20th-century casements. The south-east elevation features windows with architraves, friezes, and cornices on the first two bays of the ground floor, which have 20th-century casements. The third bay includes a single-storey projection under a hipped roof, with sashed windows that have glazing bars and floating cornices; the windows on the left return have thick glazing bars. There are also French windows inserted in one opening, and the rest of the elevation has been altered with 20th-century extensions. The north-east return includes a 20th-century single-storey extension.
