Description

Waterside House is a house and stable range located in Watermillock, dating from the 18th century, with a stable range dated 1859. The building is constructed of roughcast stone and stone rubble, topped with slate roofs, and is arranged in a U-plan over two storeys. The house forms the north-east range with four irregular bays and features a modillioned cornice.

The first two bays have sash windows with glazing bars, while the second bay includes a three-light single-chamfered-mullioned window with sashes, and paired sashes above. The third bay has two small-paned windows with two lights on the ground floor, and the fourth bay features a three-light window with chamfered reveals and flat-faced mullions, along with small-paned casements. The first floor has paired horizontally-sliding sashes with glazing bars in the third bay and a sashed window in the fourth bay. The entrance is near the centre and has a part-glazed door.

There are gable-end stacks and a cross-axial stack. The left return has French windows and a large sashed window with glazing bars on the first floor. The rear includes outshuts under catslide roofs and an end gabled wing with a large six-light polygonal bay window featuring small-paned glazing. The entrance has a dated lintel, and there is a three-light chamfered wooden-mullioned window with leaded glazing in the outshut to the right.

The adjoining north-west wing features an elliptical-arched through passage with ashlar dressings and a date stone above; to the left is a canted oriel with sashed windows and a hipped roof, while the right has small windows. An external stair is located in the passage. The south-west range is an outbuilding of stone rubble, partly converted as part of the house, with inserted windows and entrances at the left end, and a brick lateral stack. The rear has a large elliptical-headed entrance, with a smaller entrance and window in the former entrance to the left. The interior has not been inspected but may contain features of interest, such as chamfered beams and two-fielded-panel doors.
