Description
The war memorial is a white stone obelisk located at the edge of St Anne's Churchyard, adjacent to Prescot Road in Ormskirk. It features recessed corners and stands on a two-stepped base, flanked by low walls that end at dedication stones listing the names of the fallen. The front panel of the obelisk bears the inscription: 'Be mindful o Lord of thy / servants. Our brethren / who have fallen in the Great Wars / 1914 - 1918, 1939 - 1945 / and gone before us / with the sign of faith / to these and to all that / sleep in Christ grant a / place of refreshment / light and peace Amen'. Above this inscription is an incised wreath. At the top of the obelisk, there is an aperture containing a red sandstone carving of Christ on the cross, with a fallen soldier at its base. The left and right dedication stones display the names of those who fell in the First World War on their front panels, while their side panels commemorate the names of the fallen in the Second World War. This memorial serves as a poignant tribute to those who lost their lives in both world wars.
