Description
The war memorial in Colkirk commemorates those who fell in World War I, with one name added for World War II. The date of its erection is not known. Made of stone, the memorial features an obelisk on a square plinth, which stands on a four-stepped base. The front face of the obelisk has a wreath carved in bas relief and an inscription that reads "TO THE GLORY OF GOD IN LOVING MEMORY OF OUR MEN WHO FELL IN THE WAR 1914 - 1919." Below this, a scroll suspended from the plinth's cornice bears the names of the deceased. At the base of the memorial, there is a flower holder inscribed with the words "LEST WE FORGET." This memorial holds significant historical and cultural importance, both locally and nationally, and is designed in a simple classical style, situated in a prominent open area. It has group value with the nearby Grade II* listed St Mary's Church.
