COLKIRK CHURCH ROAD War Memorial

11-MAR-08

GV II

War memorial commemorating the fallen of WWI, with one name added for WWII. Date of erection not known. The memorial is made of stone, and consists of an obelisk surmounting a square plinth, which in turn stands on a four stepped base. The front face of the obelisk contains a wreath carved in bas relief, and an inscription which reads TO THE GLORY OF GOD IN LOVING MEMORY OF OUR MEN WHO FELL IN THE WAR 1914 - 1919. Beneath this, and suspended from the cornice of the plinth, is a scroll bearing the names of the dead. At the foot of the memorial, to the front, is a flower holder, inscribed with the words LEST WE FORGET.

SUMMARY OF IMPORTANCE: War memorials have a very strong historical and cultural significance on both a local and a national scale. The memorial in Colkirk is a simple classical design in a prominent open setting, and has group value with the Grade II* listed St Mary's Church. TF9191626469
