Description

The Offham War Memorial is located in St Michael's churchyard, approximately 7 meters south of the church, facing east towards open farmland. This memorial, dedicated to those who fell in World War I and later in World War II, features a simple square stone obelisk on a plinth with a prominently moulded top, set on a two-step base. The main inscription on the lower east face of the obelisk reads: "ALL HONOUR / GIVE / TO THOSE / WHO NOBLY / STRIVING / NOBLY FELL / THAT WE / MIGHT LIVE / 1914-1918." Below this, the names of 15 individuals who fell in World War I are inscribed on the plinth. The south face of the plinth bears the inscription "1939-1945," followed by the initials and surnames of four individuals who fell in World War II.

The exact date of the memorial's unveiling is unknown. The obelisk is a common design for World War I memorials, influenced by earlier examples from the Boer War and the erection of Cleopatra's Needle in 1878. The memorial is significant as a poignant reminder of the impact of these tragic events on the local community. Although it is a common type, the obelisk is well-proportioned and fits harmoniously within the churchyard, and it holds group value with the Grade I listed St Michael's Church.
