Description

Lowdham War Memorial is situated in a garden of remembrance at the eastern corner of a triangular green, where Nottingham Road meets Station Road. It stands opposite two Grade II-listed buildings, 2 Southwell Road and Merevale.

The memorial is designed as a stone obelisk with a square base, featuring carved bands and moulding near the bottom, and it ends in a square foot. This obelisk rises from a tall, four-sided plinth that has projecting faces on the north and south sides. The plinth is set on a single-stepped base, which rests on a narrow, square platform. Small bronze roundels decorate either side of the obelisk's foot.

On the east face of the obelisk, the date AD 1914 is incised. Below this, the words OUR GLORIOUS DEAD are also incised at the foot of the obelisk. The names of those who served in the First World War are recorded in incised lettering on the projecting faces of the plinth, with 29 names on the south face and 33 on the north face. The east face of the base features the original dedication for the Second World War, which reads 1939 – 1945 followed by four names. Small metal hooks on the base allow for the hanging of wreaths and floral tributes.

A polished black granite tablet, added later, lists a complete record of 62 First World War names in incised lettering painted gold, along with the dates 1914 - 1918. Below the First World War names, the tablet also includes the dates 1939 - 1945 and the names of five servicemen who died in the Second World War.
