Description

The Bridgtown War Memorial is a First World War memorial, erected around 1920, with additions for the Second World War. It is made of marble and has a square plan.

The memorial is located in a small enclosure at the junction of North Street and Longford Road, facing south-east. It features an obelisk that stands on a single-step base. The base supports a chamfered plinth, which holds a tapered pedestal. The obelisk rises from this pedestal, tapering in square section to a pyramidal top. A decorative band with a Greek fret motif is incised around the shaft just below its midpoint. On the south-east face of the pedestal, there is an oval-shaped relief depicting a dead soldier wearing a helmet, accompanied by the inscription ‘OUR / GLORIOUS DEAD / 1914 1918’. The names of 40 men from the parish who died in the First World War are inscribed on the south-west, south-east, and north-west faces of the obelisk's shaft. The north-east and south-west faces of the pedestal bear the inscription ‘1939 - 45 WAR’, along with the names of those who fell in the Second World War.

The memorial is situated within an irregular-shaped enclosure, with the rear formed by an early 20th-century brick boundary wall of Bridgtown Primary School and the front enclosed by late 20th-century railings. These enclosing features are not included in the listing.
