Description
Blaxton War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, with later additions for the Second World War. It is situated within a small enclosed garden on the north side of Bank End Road.
The memorial is made of York stone and features a small obelisk that rises from a four-sided plinth. Atop the plinth is a four-sided, pedimented cap with a moulded cornice underneath. Each pediment has a relief carved flower and foliate design at its center. The plinth is set on a two-tiered moulded foot, which rests on a narrow, square, single-stepped stone base. The dedication and names are inscribed in leaded lettering.
On the south face of the obelisk, the words "THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918" are displayed. Below this, on the south face of the plinth, is the dedication "TO THE GLORIOUS MEMORY OF" followed by nine names. Additionally, on the south face of the upper tier of the plinth foot, there is a further dedication that reads "ERECTED BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION IN GRATEFUL RECOGNITION OF THE SUPREME SACRIFICE MADE BY THE MEN OF BLAXTON NAMED ABOVE."
On the west face of the obelisk, the words "SECOND WORLD WAR 1939 – 45" are inscribed. Below this, on the west face of the plinth, are the names of three casualties from the Second World War.
