Description
The Village Hall, formerly the Finningley Church of England School, is located on the west side of Old Bawtry Road in Finningley. This building was converted from an 18th-century barn into a school around 1839 and has undergone alterations since then. It is constructed of painted brick and features a renewed pantile roof. The hall is a single storey with five bays.
The central doorway has a wide, studded door set within an eared architrave. Above the door is a shaped plaque that displays the arms and an inscription stating: 'THIS SCHOOL AND THE ADJOINING HOUSE/WERE PRESENTED TO THE PARISH/ OF FINNINGLEY/AND ENDOWED WITH AN ANNUAL INCOME OF/TWENTY POUNDS/ BY/JOHN HARVEY ESQ/OF ICKWELL BURY/AD 1855'. The other bays have large 20th-century casement windows with glazing bars, which project stone sills beneath flat arches with keystones. The building also features dentilled eaves and retains the remains of a wooden bellcote at the right end of the ridge.
Historically, Rev. Woodhouse noted that in 1836, John Harvey donated £100 to purchase a church clock, but the funds were ultimately used to convert the barn into a schoolroom, which was then given to the parish in 1855.
