Description
Whitchurch War Memorial is located on Station Road in Whitchurch, Shropshire. It features a stone obelisk topped with a wreath, which stands on a multi-stepped plinth. The front face of the upper section of the plinth displays a carved Latin cross, beneath which is a plaque that reads: IN PROUD AND GRATEFUL MEMORY/ OF THE MEN FROM THIS TOWN WHO/ GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE/ GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918/ “FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH”.
The other faces of the lower section of the plinth have plaques listing the names of those who fell in the First World War. The names of the fallen from the Second World War are inscribed on two plaques attached to the upper section of the plinth, marked with the years 1939 – 1945.
The memorial is enclosed by a low kerb and surrounded by metal posts connected with chain link at each corner. It is situated on a raised site defined by low stone walls and features a stepped approach. Behind the memorial stands a stone sundial, inscribed at the base with the words: AT THE GOING/ DOWN OF THE/ SUN AND IN THE/ MORNING WE/ WILL REMEMBER/ THEM.
