Description
The Great Witley War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in the early 1920s, with later additions for the Second World War. It is constructed from limestone and is located on the roadside at the northern boundary of the burial ground.
The memorial features a Latin cross with chamfered edges, which is mounted on a tapering octagonal shaft. This is set upon a square plinth and a three-stepped base. The main inscription, in incised lettering on the north face of the plinth, reads: ‘IN PROUD AND GRATEFUL MEMORY / OF THE MEN OF THIS PLACE / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR US / IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1919 / AND IN / 1939 – 1945’. Additionally, the names of 20 fallen parishioners are inscribed on the south face of the plinth.
