Description

First World War memorial, 1920, with Second World War additions.

MATERIALS: Stone, slate.

DESCRIPTION: Flitcham War Memorial is located at the centre of the village, within an enclosed roadside garden on Anmer Road (B1153) at the junction with Church Road.

The memorial takes the form of a stone obelisk rising from a tapering, four-sided plinth with moulded tiers at its foot, and a single step stone base beneath. The plinth is surmounted by triangular pediments to each side with moulded cornicing. The names and inscriptions are incised on a slate plaque affixed to the west side of the plinth. The dedication reads: IN MEMORY OF/ THE MEN WHO FELL IN/ THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918/ (24 NAMES)/ IN MEMORY OF THE MEN/ WHO FELL IN THE 1939-45 WAR/ (2 NAMES).

The memorial is set within a small triangular garden. It is enclosed to the west by the continuation of a dwarf boundary wall of coursed stone blocks and rounded coping, with a small metal gate allowing access to the memorial. The rest of the garden is bounded by a hedge.
