Description
Hartest War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, with additions for the Second World War. It is situated at the western edge of the village green, near several Grade II-listed buildings.
The memorial is made of Portland stone and features an obelisk that rises from a four-sided, rough-hewn, tapering plinth, which is set on a three-stepped, square base. On the west face of the obelisk, there is a laurel wreath above a blank scroll carved in relief. A band of carved laurel leaves wraps around the faces of the obelisk. The inscriptions and names are presented in incised lettering, painted black, on smooth, arched stone panels that are inset into the plinth.
The main inscription, located on the west face of the plinth, reads: "IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF HARTEST. WHO FELL IN THE WAR 1914–1919. FOR KING AND COUNTRY." The names of 14 men who died in the conflict are listed on the north and south faces of the plinth, with one additional name on the bottom of the east face. The east face also features the Second World War dedication, which reads "1939 – 1946" followed by two names.
The memorial is surrounded by eight stone posts that are connected by chains.
