Description
The dovecote, built in the 18th century with early 19th-century alterations, is located at Hillington Hall. It is constructed from carstone with brick dressings and has a square shape topped by a pyramidal roof made of black glazed pantiles. The base features a plinth of galletted carstone, with shell carstone detailing, a brick platband, and eaves courses. A dogstooth cornice runs along the top, and there is a central wooden octagonal louvred lantern with an embattled parapet. The east side has a doorway with quoined jambs and a segmental arch that includes alternate dark headers. On the west and south sides, there are three-light openings made of stone with stone mullions and Gothick heads, likely added in 1824 when W.J. Donthorne rebuilt the adjacent hall, which has since been demolished. Inside, there are 17 tiers of brick holes on each wall, a central wooden post resting on a very large brick plinth, and some of the roof timbers have been partly renewed.
