Description

Colkirk House is a large house dated 1834, located on Colkirk Hall Lane. It is constructed of gault brick, with some red brick and stone, and features concrete tiled roofs. The main block is designed as a cross wing, with gable ends that are only slightly advanced compared to the double pile service wing. The house has two storeys with attics and vaulted cellars.

The main facade faces north and consists of three bays, featuring a pedimented and slightly advanced central bay flanked by plain paired pilasters. It has sash windows with glazing bars set beneath skewback arches. A stone porch with pilasters and a deep plain entablature leads to a narrow semicircular flanking window and a two-leaf panelled door. Additional decorative elements include a moulded brick platband, moulded cornices, and arms in the central pediment with the motto "cor unum via una." The angles and pedimented gable ends are also adorned with paired pilasters.

The rear wing has three bays with sash windows that also have glazing bars beneath skewback arches, and raised panels above the first-floor windows. The south facade is made of red brick and features slightly advanced lateral bays with broken pediments that form imposts for semicircular headed windows.

Inside, there is a fine stone flying staircase with decorative cast iron balusters, a lantern, and plasterwork. The hall features three groin vaulted, three-centred bays, and the main rooms showcase fine Regency plasterwork. There is also a late 19th-century fireplace with abstract geometrical motifs designed by Jekyll and produced by Barnard, Bishop and Barnard of Norwich.
