Description

This is an early 17th-century house in Colkirk. It is built of colourwashed coursed flint with brick dressings and has a pantile roof. Originally, the house had a simple three-cell plan, with the staircase located in the central cell. The house has two storeys and an irregular arrangement of windows. The front of the house retains a long window with a rectangular hood mould, now containing 18th and 19th-century casement windows. A central front door has a modern porch and a small circular window above. The west gable has one original rectangular hood mould with late 19th-century double sash windows and a 20th-century conservatory below. Two large internal chimney stacks are located at the rear. One 19th-century window has three lights and retains an original rectangular hood mould. Two former doorways indicate the presence of demolished extensions. A slightly later and narrower two-storey extension, with a rectangular hood mould in the gable, extends from the east gable-end. The main block has a later, shallower pitched roof. The interior features a fine early 17th-century staircase with tapered balusters, newels with open knops, stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, and barred and ogee chamfer stops. The staircase was likely repositioned. A three-centred brick arch is visible in the western fireplace. The building has group value with the adjacent outbuilding.
