Description
A pair of lamp standards with pedestals is located at the north entrance of Rock Park in Barnstaple. These were likely installed in 1879, although they now feature late 20th-century tops. The pedestals are made of limestone and are square in shape with panelled sides. Each pedestal has a moulded cap topped with a triangular pediment on each side, which encloses octagonal bases for the lamp standards. The standards themselves have round, tapered shafts that are fluted and decorated, supported at the base by four scrolls. Additional scrolls extend horizontally below the moulded cap, from which a late 20th-century shaft and electric lamp holder rise. An early 20th-century photograph from Knights Photographers of Barnstaple shows the original tops of the lamp standards. Rock Park was opened in 1879 and was designed by R.D. Gould.
