Description
No. 18 Litchdon Street is a house built in 1821, with alterations made in the mid 19th century. It features solid, rendered walls, likely made of stone or brick, and has a slated roof adorned with red ridge-tiles and low parapets at the gable ends. Each gable end has a red brick chimney, with the tops featuring a projecting brick course and a moulded cap that forms an entablature; the right-hand chimney appears to have been rebuilt to match the original.
The house is double-fronted and two rooms deep, probably with a central entrance passage leading to a rear staircase. It has two storeys and a three-window range. The ground storey includes a round-arched doorway set in a shallow round-arched recess with a moulded architrave. The entrance features a six-panelled door with a knocker and a plain fanlight above. On the upper storey, there is a window with a moulded architrave, which is a sash window with two upright glazing bars that create margin panes. The outer windows are mid 19th-century canted bays that extend through both storeys. The ground-storey lights of the bays have segmental arches with moulded imposts and keyblocks, and there is a cornice at the first-floor level. Each end of the front has a pilaster shared with the adjoining houses, and there is a moulded eaves cornice.
While the interior has not been inspected, it is noted that the entrance lobby is fully panelled, and the inner door features panels below and glazing above, with margin panes that include coloured glass.
Historically, this house, along with No. 17, was put out on a building lease by the Corporation in 1821. A plan in the margin of the deed indicates that it was identical to No. 17. The house is part of an important group, contributing to the character of the terrace that includes Nos. 17, 19, and 20.
