Description
This is a house, now offices, part of a terrace, located on Litchdon Street in Barnstaple. It was originally built in 1821 and subsequently remodelled in the mid-19th century, with a rear wing rebuilt around 1882. The walls are likely of stone or brick and rendered, with some areas of yellow brick in the rear wing. The roof is slate, with red ridge tiles and low parapets. A shared red brick chimney rises from the left-hand gable, alongside No.19, and a yellow brick chimney is located on the right-hand gable.
The building is double-fronted and of double depth, with alterations to the ground storey. It has two storeys and a three-window front, where the right-hand window has been developed as a canted bay. The windows have eared architraves and plain sashes; the ground floor of the bay features a French window. A round-arched doorway, framed by an eared architrave and glazed door, is centrally positioned. Pilasters are present at each end of the front, the left one being shared with No.19. A moulded eaves cornice runs along the top, and the bay window terminates with a low parapet.
Historically, the house was leased in 1821 to John Gould, a mason, by the Corporation. In 1882, it was leased to Charles E Pronger, a surgeon, with an agreement to spend £500 on new buildings, alterations, and repairs. The properties Nos. 17-20 were formerly known as Litchdon Terrace. The building forms part of a formerly uniform terrace, alongside Nos. 17, 18, and 19.
