Description
No. 1 Union Place is a house that has been converted into a hotel, originally built in the early 19th century, with what appears to be a slightly later extension on the right side. The building features solid, rendered walls likely made of stone or brick, and has a slated roof with a catslide at the rear, accented by red ridge-tiles. It has a double-fronted, double-depth layout and stands two storeys tall, with a three-window range and an additional window in the extension to the right.
The main structure has sash windows, with the end windows having eight panes each, while the lower ground-storey sashes contain twelve panes. The middle window on the upper storey has six panes. There is a round-arched doorway in the center of the ground floor, featuring a six-panelled door with a knocker and a fanlight with radial glazing bars. The extension to the right is set back slightly and includes a projecting, canted bay window, likely added later, which has sashes with the middle ones containing two panes. A late 20th-century porch has been added for the hotel.
The interior has not been inspected. This house, along with No. 2 Union Place, has group value with Nos 1-6 Union Terrace to the southwest and Holy Trinity Church to the northeast.
