Description
The obelisk at the north entrance of Rock Park in Barnstaple commemorates the opening of the park, which likely occurred in 1879. It is constructed from grey granite, featuring a base of polished red granite and a pedestal made of smooth grey stone. The design is simple, with a pedestal consisting of three steps and a square base that includes a shaped inscription panel on the north side. At the top, there is a moulded cap from which a plain obelisk rises. The inscription reads: "THIS PARK suggested by CHANTER'S GREEN which it joins was presented to his Native Town by WILLIAM FREDERICK ROCK August 12th 1879. Wm Avery Esqr. Mayor. It is hoped the public will protect what is intended for public enjoyment." The historical note indicates that Rock Park was laid out by R.D. Gould.
