Description
The war memorial in Rode was erected in 1920 and designed by local architect Edwin Wooley. Made of Portland stone, it features a square plan surrounded by stone bollards connected by chains. The memorial includes a decorated Latin cross head atop an octagonal shaft, which stands on a square plinth raised on three steps. Attached to the plinth are plaques, all renewed in 2008, with three commemorating local men who lost their lives during the First World War. The inscriptions, in black painted lettering, express a tribute to the fallen and include a quote about their bravery. Additional plaques honor those from Rode who died in both the Great War and the Second World War. This memorial serves as a significant reminder of the community's loss during the First World War and was funded through public subscription, costing £220. It holds cultural and historic importance and has group value with nearby listed buildings.
