Description

Rock Park Lodge is a lodge built around 1879, designed in the Queen Anne style. It is constructed from Flemish bond red brick, featuring a single-storey block with stretcher bond, and has a concrete tile roof adorned with terracotta finials. The building includes brick stacks with some tumbling and corbelled cornices, and cast-iron rainwater goods.

The lodge has an asymmetrical plan that faces Rock Park to the west, with a service court at the back adjacent to New Road. The main block is one and a half storeys high, with an entrance front that has one window. Notable brick detailing includes rubbed and moulded brickwork, and an external panel featuring a terracotta swag of fruit within an egg and dart frame on the northeast side. The eaves cornice is coved, and there is a platband with terracotta motifs. The windows are original casements with high transoms and glazing bars.

The entrance elevation features a porch located at the angle between the main block and a projecting wing. The main range has a half-hipped roof and a two-storey bay, with a tile-hung panel between the three-light ground-floor and first-floor windows. The ground-floor window of the bay is decorated with an elaborate dentil frieze, modillions, and corner brackets. The porch has a hipped roof supported by a post and an eight-panel door, along with a small oriel window on moulded brackets on the left side. The end of the wing facing south has canted corners and is corbelled at the first-floor level, featuring a central two-light ground-floor casement flanked by one-light windows in the return corners of the bay. The roof is hipped with a large gabled half dormer that includes a four-light oriel window.

On the east side, there is a single-storey block with a scalloped gutter and short curved outlet pipes. The rear elevation, which faces New Road, has courtyard walls with a gateway that includes gate piers topped with ball finials. The interior has not been inspected. This lodge is recognized as an early example of its architectural style.
