Description

106 and 107 Newport Road are a pair of terrace houses built in the early 19th century. They have solid rendered walls, with the top of the right side wall finished in slate. The houses feature a slated roof and have a red brick chimney on the left side wall, a painted brick chimney on the party wall, and a large red brick chimney on the right side wall, likely shared with No. 108.

The buildings are two storeys high, with semi-basements and garrets. Each house has a two-window range, with a doorway to the left and a slightly narrower window above it. The round-arched doorways are flanked by pilasters, and No. 106 has a triglyphed entablature, which is not present at No. 107. The doors are recessed and heavily moulded, featuring six panels with centre bead-moulding. The recessed areas in front of the doors have groin-vaulted ceilings. Access to the doors is via a flight of eight steps that bridge over the basement area, with thick flanking walls that are rounded at No. 106 and chamfered at No. 107.

The ground- and upper-storey windows have six-paned sashes, while the semi-basement window at No. 106 has sashes with a 3 over 6 pane configuration. There is a moulded eaves-board along the top. Each house has a large gabled dormer, likely added later, with glazed sides, two pairs of sashes with margin panes at the front, and plain barge-boards. The interiors have not been inspected, but the ground-floor front windows are noted to have panelled shutters.
