Description

Newport Terrace is a terrace of eight houses built in the early 19th century, situated on the north-east side of Newport Road, Barnstaple. The houses have rendered facades and slate roofs. Chimneys are located on the left side wall of numbers 1 to 4, and on the right side wall of numbers 5 to 8. The height varies; numbers 1, 2, and 6 to 8 are two storeys high, while numbers 4 and 5 are three storeys high. Semi-basements are present, with garrets likely added later at numbers 2 and 6 to 8.

Numbers 1, 2, and 5 to 7 have a two-window range, while numbers 3, 4, and 8 have a three-window range. Doorways are positioned to the right of numbers 1, 2, 6, and 7, centrally at numbers 3, 4, and 8, and to the left of number 5.

The central houses, numbers 4 and 5, stand out with their additional storey and feature giant Ionic pilasters between and flanking the windows on the ground and second storeys. These pilasters support an entablature, damaged at number 5, which projects forward over the end pilasters and over each pair of pilasters in the centre. The doorways of numbers 4 and 5 have round arches with panelled pilasters, moulded archivolts and keyblocks; a female head is carved on the keyblock at number 5. The semi-basement at number 4 has horizontal channelling.

The flanking houses (numbers 1 to 3 and 6 to 8) have flat-headed doorways with attached Doric columns and triglyphed entablatures with modillioned cornices. Raised bands delineate the storeys. Panelled pilasters flank each group of three houses, although the left-hand pilaster of the right-hand group has been altered. Stepped eaves cornices, now rebuilt in a less accurate style at number 8, originally protruded over the pilasters but now do so only over the right-hand pilaster of the left-hand group.

All eight houses have six-panelled front doors, with the central panels smaller than the others; some upper and middle panels are now glazed at numbers 2, 3, 6, and 8. The windows are mostly six-paned sashes, but those in the third storey of numbers 4 and 5 have only three panes in the upper sash. Dormers are present on the roofs of numbers 1, 6, and 7 (hipped), and number 8 (gabled). The interiors have not been inspected.
