Description

This lamp post, located at the junction of New Road and Park Terrace in Barnstaple, is a cast-iron lamp standard dating from around 1879. It features a free Baroque style and stands on a square pedestal with sunk panels, four gables, and an octagonal base. The standard is stamped with "Geo. Smith and Co., Sun Foundry, Glasgow." It includes heavy S-shaped scrolled brackets, anthemion decoration, and a scrolly ladder rest. The lamp itself is tapering cylindrical with a conical finial. Rock Park, where this lamp post is situated, was opened in 1879 and was laid out by R.D. Gould.
