Description
This lamp post, located at the corner of Gordon Square and Gordon Street, dates from the 1890s and was cast by McDowell, Steven and Co in Glasgow and London. It is made of cast iron and features a base decorated with acanthus leaves. The door, which is currently missing, originally displayed the name "St Pancras." The lamp post has a tall, plain shaft with a decorated band and retains the original cradle type fitting for a carbon arc lamp, although it has been converted to accommodate an incandescent lamp and has been out of use since 1976. This lamp post is historically significant as it is the last remaining example of this type from the pioneering authority in electric street lighting in London, established in 1892.
