Description

This is a terrace of seven houses, numbers 47 to 53, dating from the mid-19th century, located on Gordon Square in Camden. The houses are constructed of yellow stock brick with alternating rusticated and plain stucco ground floors, and have rusticated stucco quoins. They are five storeys high and include basements. Each house has three windows, with a further three-window return on the right-hand side forming the entrance to number 53.

The architectural style is Italianate, featuring projecting central (number 50) and end bays (numbers 47 and 53). Numbers 47, 50, and 53 have Doric prostyle porticoes with balustraded parapets, while numbers 48, 49, 51, and 52 feature cornices and continuous cast-iron balconies. The remaining windows are architraved sashes with cornices to the second floors of numbers 47, 50, and 53. The first floors of numbers 47, 50, and 53 have architraved sash windows with pediments and continuous balustraded balconies supported by large brackets. A moulded stucco sill band runs along the fourth floor, topped by a projecting, bracketed stucco cornice. A slab chimney is situated above number 53, featuring a scaled-down cornice. Attached cast-iron railings with pineapple and foliated finials are present to the areas.

The interiors retain notable original features, including moulded ceilings. Attached to the return of number 53 is a wall connecting to number 45 Tavistock Square, creating a balanced composition; this wall is constructed of stucco and is divided into seven bays by pilasters. Number 51 was formerly the residence of Lytton Strachey, the critic and biographer, as commemorated by a plaque.
