Description
This is a terrace of five houses built around 1824 by Thomas Cubitt. The houses are made of yellow stock brick with a stucco ground floor, where Nos. 55 and 59 feature rusticated detailing.
The exterior has a symmetrical front with 11 bays, where three bays at each end project outward. The left side has one window, while the right side, facing Woburn Square, has three windows and a single-storey, one-window extension. The buildings rise four storeys and have basements. The entrances on the main facade have been converted to 20th-century sash windows. The projecting bays are supported by four pilasters that rise through the first and second storeys, holding up an entablature at the third floor level, which continues in a simplified form across the front. The windows in the projecting bays are tripartite sashes, except for the first floor, which has casements with cast-iron balconies. The central facade features architraved first-floor casements with cast-iron balconies, and there is a plain stucco sill band on the second floor. The remaining windows are recessed sashes. The parapet has a stucco capping, and the returns have pilasters at the angles that support the entablature at the third floor. The entrance to No. 55 is located in the left-hand single-storey extension, which has pilasters and a segmental-headed window. The entrance to No. 59 is on the right-hand return and features a Doric porch topped by a balustraded balcony above the first-floor window.
The attached cast-iron railings with foliated finials are present in front of the properties. The interiors have not been inspected.
