Description
Numbers 36 and 46, along with the attached railings and wall on Endsleigh Place, form part of a terrace of 11 houses built around 1825 by Thomas Cubitt. These houses are constructed from yellow stock brick with rusticated stucco ground floors, except for No. 46, which is plain. The terrace features a balanced design of four storeys and basements, with three windows for each house. The entrance to No. 36 is located on the return to Endsleigh Place, featuring square-headed, recessed doorways with fanlights and panelled doors.
Nos. 36, 38, 43, and 45 slightly project from the facade and are adorned with four Corinthian pilasters that rise through the first and second floors, supporting an entablature that continues across the rest of the terrace at the third-floor level. There are continuous cast-iron balconies for the first-floor casements, while No. 46 includes cornices. The second and third floors have architraved sash windows, and the third floor features pilaster strips above the pilasters. The cornice and blocking course complete the design.
The return of No. 36 has a balustraded entrance porch that continues the entablature and pilaster treatment, creating a cohesive appearance linked by a low screen wall along Endsleigh Place to No. 29 Tavistock Square. The interiors have not been inspected. Notably, No. 46 was the residence of the economist John Maynard Keynes, as indicated by a plaque from the Greater London Council.
