Description

Passfield Hall is a terrace of seven houses, now functioning as a hall of residence, built around 1825 by Thomas Cubitt. The building features darkened brick with a stucco ground floor and has three bays at each end that are rusticated. It stands four storeys high with basements, and each former house has three windows. Houses 1 and 7 have single window returns to Taviton Street and Endsleigh Street, respectively. The facade is symmetrical, with projecting central (No. 4) and end bays (Nos. 1 and 7).

The entrances are round-arched, with Nos. 2 and 5 featuring pilaster-jambs that support cornice-heads, radial patterned fanlights, and panelled doors. The doorways of Nos. 3, 4, and 6 have been converted for use as windows. Houses 1 and 7 include entrance porches on their returns. The windows are recessed sashes with reddened, gauged brick flat arches, and the central bays have architraves and round-arched ground floor windows. A continuous cast-iron balcony runs at the first floor level in front of the casement windows.

On the end bays, pilasters extend through the first and second floors to support a cornice at the third floor, with pilaster strips on the attic storey. The building is topped with a cornice and blocking course, and the returns feature pilasters and an ornamental panel between the first and third floor windows. The attached cast-iron railings with urn finials are present in the areas. The interiors have not been inspected.
