Description
Numbers 14 and 15, along with the attached railings and pillars, form a university hall that was later used as a library. Built in 1848 by T.L. Donaldson, the building is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and is designed in the Tudor style.
The exterior features five storeys and a semi-basement, with a double front and five bays of windows. The facade is enhanced by octagonal turrets with stone finials at the corners and flanking the entrance. There is a stone band at the first-floor sill and a wide second-floor sill band adorned with quatrefoil decoration and crockets. The third floor has string courses, one of which also includes crockets. The entrance is marked by a four-centred arch doorway with a moulded architrave, decorated spandrels, a hood-mould with decorated label-stops, and a panelled door. Above the entrance, an oriel window with four pointed-headed lights extends through the first and second floors, featuring a quatrefoil-enriched apron at the second floor, a cornice, and a brick gable. Most windows, except those in the semi-basement, have pointed-headed lights and hood-moulds with decorated label-stops. The ground floor windows, which flank the entrance, consist of two lights, while the outer bays have four lights. The first and second floors have similar windows but with enriched spandrel panels. The building is capped by a stone-capped, crenellated parapet with a string course featuring crockets.
Inside, the entrance hall boasts a heavy Gothic-style stone imperial staircase. Behind this hall is a panelled room with stained glass windows. The first-floor library includes a cast-iron gallery. The property is complemented by attached cast-iron railings and octagonal stone pillars topped with shaped finials.
