Description
The Village Hall, originally built as a school in 1852 by the Scargill Trust, is a single-storey building located in West Hallam. Constructed of red brick featuring blue brick diaper work and gritstone dressings, it has plain and fishscale tile roofs and stone coped gables. The building has diamond plan lateral brick stacks, one of which includes an external chimney breast, and two stacks are situated in the pitch of the roof.
The north elevation consists of three bays. To the right, there is a projecting gabled bay with a two-light chamfered mullion window on the ground floor, which has cast iron diamond pane casements. Above this window is a single light window with a chamfered surround and a plain casement. To the left, in the extruded angle, is a square porch featuring a Tudor arched doorway with a chamfered surround and a panelled door, topped with a stone plaque and a coped parapet. Flanking the porch are a three-light and a two-light recessed and chamfered, mullioned and transomed window, each set in a gabled half dormer and fitted with cast iron diamond casement lights. These windows are positioned beside a projecting chimney breast that has two set-offs on either side. Low coped walls and railings are attached to the north side of the building.
