Description

Shardlow House is a house dating to 1726, with alterations made in the early and late 19th century. It is constructed of red brick on a stone plinth, with the street elevation rendered and featuring plain horizontal bands. The roof is covered in plain tiles, with a crested ridge tile and two brick ridge stacks incorporating decorated heads and pierced bargeboards on the gables. The house has two storeys plus an attic and basement, and two bays. The north-facing street elevation has double gables and a central, early 19th-century stone porch with Doric columns, a moulded cornice and blocking course above. The porch shelters a glazed panelled door, with a further glazing bar sash window to either side. Below the eastern sash window is a chamfered two-light mullion basement window. Above the ground floor sashes are two more glazing bar sashes, set closer together, with a blocked opening in the centre. Above again are two further sashes, one in each gable. A lead hopper head, inscribed ‘CIS 1726’ with decorated gutter brackets, sits between the gable windows. The east and west elevations feature a combination of glazing bar and plain sashes. The rear elevation has a small, original timber cross-window illuminating the central staircase. Internally, the house includes early 19th-century marble fireplaces in the two front rooms and an 18th-century turned baluster dogleg staircase.
