Description
The Shardlow War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921, with later additions for the Second World War. It is made of Darley Dale stone and is located on the church path in the northern part of the churchyard of the Church of St James, which is also listed as Grade II. The memorial is situated next to the Grade II-listed gate piers and railings at the entrance to the churchyard on London Road.
The memorial features a lantern head with a carved figure of Christ on the north face, positioned atop a moulded collar on an octagonal shaft. The base of the shaft is chamfered, transitioning from a square base to an octagon at the top. This shaft rests on an octagonal plinth that has recessed sections on all four sides: north, east, south, and west. The entire structure stands on an octagonal base.
On the north face of the shaft, there is a shield carved in relief that displays the years 1914 and 1918, with the word REMEMBER incised beneath it. The names of those who fell in the First World War are carved into the north-east and north-west faces of the plinth.
