Entrance Gates And Wall To Shardlow Hall

The entrance gates and wall to Shardlow Hall were built around 1870 and are constructed from ashlar stone. The structure features four tall square piers, with two located at the center and two on either side. Between the piers are tall curving walls, and ramped walls are attached to the outer sides of the piers. Each pier has two pointed-headed panels on each side, along with a rectangular panel above that contains two inset raised diamonds. The tops of the piers are capped with moulded stepped pyramidal copings, while the walls have triangular sectioned copings. On the west side of the western pier, the ramped wall extends for about 10 yards before rising again and ending in a plain square pier topped with a pyramidal coping stone. This structure is included for its group value context.
