Description
The gate piers and railing to the south of St James Church were built in 1838 through public subscriptions. They are made of stone and cast iron. The iron railings rest on a moulded stone plinth and feature octagonal stone piers at the center and each end. These piers have moulded bases, coved cornices, and crenellated pyramidal copings. In between the two central piers, there are a pair of iron gates with plain dograils and fleur de lys finials, topped by a scrolled lantern arch that holds a 20th-century lantern. The railings on either side also have fleur de lys finials and octagonal finials on the main rails. On the south side, the railings are supported by large pierced iron brackets featuring cusped mouchettes and a cusped circle in the center. This structure is included for its group value.
