Description
The Mead is a house dated 1740, which was extended to the northwest in the 19th century. It is constructed of red brick and features both pantile and slate roofs. The building has an 'L' shaped plan and stands at two storeys with attics. The original house has five windows, with the central bay set forward and topped with a brick pediment above the eaves. It has a brick plinth, moulded brick platbands, and rusticated brick quoins.
There is a central 19th-century single-storey brick porch that has double half-glazed entrance doors beneath a splayed elliptical brick arch. The porch features a stone parapet with iron balusters. The house has sash windows with glazing bars, stone sills, and flat gauged brick arches. A Venetian window with a shouldered architrave is located in the pediment. The roof includes two gabled dormers with moulded timber verges and casements with glazing bars.
Additional features include a moulded timber cornice, curved gables, and 19th-century paired octagonal end stacks. The 19th-century additions at each end match the style of the original structure. The plan and fenestration are irregular, with glazing bars and gauged brick arches, and there are clustered shafts with battlemented caps in the hipped roof to the southwest. The interior features panelled rooms and a good staircase. The house is dated 1740 and displays the monogram I.S. on the south gable.
