Description

The Old School House, including the gate and railings, is a former Free School and master's house built around 1720. It is constructed of red brick and covered with 'French' pantiles. The building has two storeys and attics, with a single-storey outshut at the rear. The facade features five bays, with a central raised and fielded six-panel door topped by a fanlight. The ground floor has 19th-century sash windows in their original openings, each with gauged brick arches. There is a rendered plinth and a brick platband at the first-floor level, along with moulded timber eaves. The gables have parapets with moulded brick kneelers and brick tumbling in, and there are gable stacks. Three dormers with two-light casement windows, featuring wrought iron lights, are present; the outer dormers have pedimented gables, while the central dormer has a semi-circular head, all with moulded timber verges. The interior dates mainly from around 1875, with most doors being early 18th-century raised and fielded two-panel types. A dining room fireplace, relocated from the first floor in the late 20th century, has a lugged timber surround, a pulvinated frieze, and a dentilled cornice, possibly from around 1740. The roof features staggered butt purlins with tapered tenons. The late 19th-century forecourt railings are set on a dwarf brick wall, with cast iron columnar gate posts topped with finials and a wrought iron gate with an overthrow. The building was originally constructed by the parish for the education of ten poor children as a result of "Chapman's Charity" established in 1718 and was later known as the endowed school. It was converted into a schoolmaster's house around 1875 when it was amalgamated with the nearby National School.
